Developed by a team of engineers under Burkhard Göschel, the goal in developing the coupe was to improve the rigidity of the Z3 roadster, and create the ultimate “Ultimate Driving Machine.” The team succeeded, and in doing so also created what might be one of the best sports cars of it’s time. Early U.S. models were equipped with the 240 hp. S52 engine. Though a good performer, the legend of the M Coupe was solidified with the introduction of the 315 hp S54 in 2001. Paired with the slick-shifting ZF gearbox, and limited slip differential, this combination proved to be the stuff of driving enthusiasts’ dreams. In 2016 Automobile Magazine wrote: “with 315 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque, you don’t have to do the math to figure out what happens when you stuff a big, bawdy motor under the hood of a small car.”
