Residing on the African Savannah and confronted with a threat, the
sleek, nimble, and fast Impala will take flight to outrun or
confuse its competitor. Aptly named, the Chevrolet version
introduced in 1958, continued to emulate its animal namesake
through years of design modifications, and power options made
available.
This black beauty brings a shudder to my mind. As a frequent
speeder, I've ingrained the Impala shape in my mind that I need to
slow down in anticipation it is not the po po awaiting my quick
arrival to their radar in their unmarked cruiser (this Impala). Now
they patrol in anything, so that theory is gone by the wayside,
however it still sticks in my mind!
Exterior
Beautifully straight all steel panels draped in deep gloss black
base coat, and clear coat, are seen throughout this 4 door car.
Virtually dent free, the car's exterior paint could be said to be
in all but showroom condition. All correct badging, and bumpers are
attached, with a hint of chromed trimmings around the side glass,
all else is menacing black. 17" cast aluminum wheels are seen all
around and add some bright spots to the corners.
Interior
Gray leather on bucket seats in front, and a full bench in back
shows in slightly worn condition. A leather wrapped steering wheel,
leather door panels, and vinyl padded dash with cobalt blue digital
readouts for speed and odometer, are adorning the passenger
compartment as well. All power conveniences, power windows, power
steering, power brakes, power locks, AM/FM seek scan radio/CD
player are within the confines of this interior with most controls
conveniently located in the doors. Twilight sentinel sensor turns
the headlights on for you when it is the perfect time. Don't forget
the tinted glass all around as well. Somewhat soiled grey carpet
floods the floors, and above is a tight gray headliner.
Drivetrain
A 350ci LT1 EFI V8 with a super smooth 4-speed 4L60E automatic
transmission recently rebuilt, with only 1K miles clocked on it,
takes you down the road in a breeze. The 10-bolt 3.08 rear axle
aids this getting down the road as well. Engine bay is in overall
fair to good condition with slight corrosion and aging shown.
Undercarriage
Plenty of patina and some surface rust on drivetrain parts and
front structure are noted underneath. Floorpans are solid, rockers
have slight surface rust, and new Pypes mufflers are now installed
with a stainless X exhaust setup. Power disc brakes are on all 4
corners, and the consigner states that new rotors, as well as the
calipers, hoses and lines.
Drive-Ability
The ride and drive suspension and Decarbon shocks as well as a
limited slip axle contribute to the smoothness of the ride. This
car started right up and was ready to go. Most of its miles were
logged on highways commuting from PA to DC so I cruised a bit, and
it ran swimmingly. I noted the power antenna does not work,
otherwise everything is all buttoned up.
Seen here at Classic Auto Mall a near perfect exterior, and nice
all leather interior, fair engine bay, and underside, but a smooth
quick starting engine, and almost undetectable shifting
transmission, in combination with all the convenience options,
offer a great combination for the classic Chevrolet which had a run
of nearly 40 years.
