Launched in 1961 on the compact F-85, Oldsmobiles Cutlass hit its
stride in 1964 as an upscale mid-size model line on a full-frame
chassis. Success in a crowded market grew by leaps and bounds when
Olds mid-size lineup received a major restyling for 1968 and two
chassis lengths a shorter 112-inch wheelbase for two-door models
and 116 inches for four-doors and wagons. The new design was
particularly attractive on the two-doors, with the sleek, aircraft
fuselage-inspired styling continued through 1972. While a
six-cylinder engine was still standard on the F-85/Cutlass for
1968, most buyers opted for Olds Rocket V-8 engine, available as a
high-torque Turnpike Cruiser 2-barrel unit or with 4-barrel
carburetion. GMs new Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed automatic
transmission was a popular option, with an available
console-mounted floor shifter. The Cutlass S offered upscale trim
and upholstery for a great combination of sportiness and luxury on
the Holiday Hardtop Coupe, pillared Coupe, and sleek Convertible.
Today, while the 1968-72 models are very popular with collectors
for their style, drivability, and noticeably better build quality
than many other cars of the era, the first-year 1968 models are
relatively rare in the classic-vehicle marketplace. Simply gorgeous
from top to bottom, this Cutlass S Convertible is a virtually
impeccable example of Oldsmobiles upscale mid-size models for 1968.
Finished in Red over a Black interior with front bucket seats,
highlights include a Black power-operated convertible top, center
console, AM radio, and three-spoke steering wheel. Highlights
specific to the S include twin hood louvers, unique badging and
trim, and upgraded interior appointments. A 4-barrel 350 CI Rocket
V-8 engine and floor-shifted Hydramatic 3-speed automatic
transmission deliver plenty of power for easy cruising, along with
power brakes and power steering for a great drive whether the top
is up or down. Detailing is excellent throughout the car, including
the engine, underhood area, undercarriage, and trunk, consistent
with proper care and maintenance. Seat belts and a fully equipped
trunk including a mounted spare, roadside jack, and floor mat are
all in place. Riding on a set of upgraded chrome road wheels
mounting BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires, this top-notch 1968 Cutlass
S convertible includes an original owners manual, convertible-top
operation manual, and full-color Cutlass dealer sales brochure.
