Rust-free body, and frame, Correct Super Sport wheels, Goodyear
Polyglas tires Restored in Black Cherry with Black stripes, black
soft top, and interior. Think of it: this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle
SS396 is a hot-looking convertible with a romping, stomping
big-block V-8, 4-speed manual transmission, and one of the best
handling packages of its day, and it was considered a compromise.
That judgment, of course, was in the context of comparison to its
NHRA World Championship-winning big brother, the SS454 LS6, long
coveted as one of the ultimate classic-era muscle machines. On its
own, the Chevelle SS396 still shines as an example of Chevrolet's
contributions to that era, in terms of both styling and
performance. The 1970 Chevelle SS was simply one of the
best-looking automobiles ever produced by Chevrolet to that time,
with athletic proportions, bulging contours, sporty exterior
detailing, and a wide track stance. The SS interior was more like
an office for the driver with room for company, sporting
comfortable and handsomely styled available bucket seats, a
businesslike instrument panel with blacked-out insert and special
round gauges, padded-rim Sport steering wheel, and, on 4-speed
models, a well-placed shifter topped with a simple chromed steel
ball. There is even more to recommend this authentically restored
SS396 convertible. Attractively finished in desirable Black Cherry
paint with black sport stripes, power top, and interior, it
combines a Cowl Induction-fed L34 396/350 HP big-block V-8 with a
Muncie 4-speed and Positraction rear end augmented with power
steering and power front disc brakes. In addition to the badges,
hood pins, SS wheels and Goodyear Polyglas tires, blacked-out
front, and rear treatments, and F41 special suspension that
comprise the SS package, the car includes two Day Two add-ons in
the form of an under-dash SunPro tach and Hurst shifter. Correct CE
replacement block 396/350 HP engine. 12 bolt rear end. Muncie
4-speed transmission. 12 bolt Positraction. Frame-off restoration.
Tilt column. Engine Casting no. 3969854, Date Code J170, Pad no.
